Activation Status:
Inactive, Standing Down

The Spartanburg County Search and Rescue Team (SCSAR - Division of the Spartanburg County Office of Emergency Management) began in 2007 with our initial SARFUN course followed by our first search in 2008.  Now, 51 activations later, 40 in the last three years, our group continues to expand, train, evolve, and offer assistance to any official requesting agency.  A close partner with SCSARDA, we often train and work as one to offer a comprehensive search effort.  To learn more about SCSAR, call 864-595-5365 or visit us online at  To learn more about SCSARDA, visit them online at

Latest Updates:

Verified Volunteers

Starting in March 2016, Verified Volunteers will now conduct the background checks for SCSAR.  All SCSAR members are required to have these new checks completed by 4/1/16.  We have been very impressed with the thorough nature of their checks and the monthly rechecks offered by this service.  As always, we strive to provide highly trained, credentialed, professional and Verified Volunteers.

6/2/17 -  Robbinsville NC Search

A special thank you to the 10 SCSAR and SCSARDA members who assisted with a search in Robbinsville, NC on 6/2 with very short notice. We were notified about the search around 10:30pm on 6/1 and still had enough personnel to produce two dog teams, a river search team, and a member dedicated to comm's. With a great team effort by all, the missing grandmother and granddaughter were found alive and well.

5/18/17 - Moore SC Search

A special thank you to the 21 SCSAR and SCSARDA members who assisted with a search in Moore SC last night/early this morning. For those who were there, it was unique in nature but with a great outcome. The gentleman arrived at his apartment this morning way outside of the search area (4.6 miles from PLS - as the crow flies) Once again, we can't say enough about our team who searched the swampy/marsh area until the early morning hours and were willing to go the entire night if asked to do so - great job by all

2/3-2/5 - NC SAR Exercise

From 2/3-2/5, 14 of our members attended the Richmond County NC SAR Exercise at the Millstone 4-H Camp (awesome location, great food, nice cabins, top notch). Overall, it was a great experience. We had the opportunity to complete 5 task assignments and had just began our 6th when the subjects were found for the last time. Our team had a find on Saturday night and overall, we cannot say thank you enough for those in NC giving us the opportunity to participate. During this exercise we had the opportunity to polish existing skills, acquire new ones, and most importantly, continue to build teamwork and camaraderie among our SAR family. Thank you again to those who made it all happen and to those who chose to participate in this great exercise opportunity.

2/1/17 - Woodruff SC

Woodruff search today for 52-year-old with dementia - first SCSARDA/SCSAR ground team deployed located him in the woods - great teamwork by everyone - This was very textbook and we are fortunate to have received numerous MLSO and dementia trainings from Roland Hamrick and Teepa Snow over the last 5 plus years

1/22 & 1/28 - Wellford, SC Search

On 1/24 and 1/28 SCSARDA/SCSAR searched for a missing person and we can't say enough great things about those who participated in one or both days. It was a great team effort with just enough downtime to have a 30 minute lunch donated by Bojangles in Lyman. Once again, a special thank you to everyone and thoughts/prayers to all involved.

12/18/16 - Greenville SC - Search

Members from SCSARDA and SCSAR were activated to Greenville SC to search for a 14 year old autistic child who had been missing for 18 hours.  Several hours into the search, with huge assistance from the media and the Greenville County Shierff's office the boy was located 10 miles from the PLS.

10/26/16 - Henderson NC - Search

Members from SCSARDA and SCSAR were activated to Rutherfordton NC to search for missing subject.  Very shortly after the activation our Dog/flanker team located the missing individual.  It was a great team effort by everyone involved.

9/11/16 - Spartanburg County SC - MLSO Training

Members from SCSAR and Henderson County Rescue took a two weekend, 34 hour course in Managing Land Search Operations.  This was the third time we have offered this training to our SAR members.   The course was taught by Roland Hamrick of SCSLLC out of Shelby NC.

8/21/16 - Spartanburg County SC - IMT Training

Members from SCSAR, SCARDA, Southern Pride and Henderson County Rescue took a 16 hour weekend training course on Local All Hazard Incident Management Teams.  This was the first time we offered this course to our SAR members.  It was taught by Roland Hamrick and Jeffrey Cardwell of SCSLLC out of Shelby NC.

8/6/16 - Abbeville County SC

Saturday morning at 6:00am SCSAR, SCSARDA, and a Georgia Dog Team began a search operational period in hopes of helping find a missing fisherman.  It was a great team effort and any pertinent information found was given to the proper authorities.

6/23/16 - Avery County NC

Late Wednesday night we received the call regarding a search in the Linville area for a missing person to commence at 8am on Thursday.  With it being during the week, a few of our members took vacation days and made the trip.  We were there at 7:45am and broke up into a dog team and ground search team.  Both teams worked tirelessly but unfortunately were unable to locate the missing subject.  Two days later he was located a 1/4 mile outside of our assigned search area.  Please keep his friends and family in your thoughts and prayers.

6/5/16 - Chester County SC Search

Late Saturday night we received the call regarding a search in Chester County for a missing sky diver.  Following the ENS activations and some personal texts, we mustered up 20 plus to help find this individual (only a few pictured below).  While the outcome wasn't what we wanted, we're glad he was found.  Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.  Below is a pic from the Chester SC search and of course, more are on our facebook.  Thanks again to so many who were able to come out to one or all three SCSAR events that took place the first weekend of June.

6/4/16 - Conestee Park Activation

SCSAR made a rare appearance in Greenville County to help assist with finding a missing man with advanced Lou Gehrig's Disease.  Fortunately, the man was able to locate a church and the proper authorities were notified.  However, I can[t say enough about our team, their willingness to come out (many absolutely exhausted), and show their dedication to SAR.  Below is a group pic with most of the people who made it to Conestee on 6/4.

6/4/16 - Mock Search

A special thanks to SWW and all of our volunteers (100 who committed showed) for coming out on a very hot Saturday in June to do a Mock Search.  Also, a special thanks to Roland Hamrick and one of his colleagues for evaluating.  All in all, a lot of great lessons learned. The entire exercise, whether the Friday night setup, the actual exercise, or the hectic teardown due to an actual activation exemplified team.  It was a great job by everyone.  Below is a picture from the exercise and as always, more are on our Facebook.

4/10/16 - Teepa Snow Seminar

A special thanks to Teepa Snow for coming out and doing an all day, 2 session seminar on Dementia.  As always, she is the best at what she does and we're very fortunate she agreed to come back and share her knowledge and expertise with is.  Below is a picture and more pictures and videos are on our facebook page:

4/4 - 4/6 - Mills River Search

A special thanks to our ten SCSAR volunteers who came out one or both days of the Mills River search.  Please know how much we appreciate everyone of of you for taking time away from you jobs and families.  Also, a special thank you to SCSARDA for your continued support and partnership.  There would not be an SCSAR without an SCSARDA and all of the wonderful volunteers from both search groups.  As always, everyone with SCSARDA was great as were all of the agencies involved with this search effort.  Thanks again everyone.

2/20/16 - Oconee Search

With the Oconee search we were to limit the number of our personnel to 8 as the focus was working the dog teams.  Therefore we chose 8 for this search and within 3 hours of our arrival one of our partnering teams, NCSARDA, located the subject.

2/13/16 - Mock Search

About 50 SAR members attended our  mock search on February 13 at the Spartanburg Water Works.   Overall, it was a very positive learning experience and gave our mapping communication teams a great opportunity to continue to increase their proficiency in various mapping areas.  A special thanks to the 2 scout troops who were our lost subjects in the woods and a special thanks to the awesome volunteer turnout.
